Right from the day the movie was announced, Ribhu Dasgupta’s Te3n seemed like a spiritual successor to Kahaani and this comes as no surprise since Kahaani’s director Sujoy Ghosh is one of the producers of this film. But does Te3n live up to the rich legacy of the original? Let’s find out. Te3n tells us the tale of one John Biswas (Amitabh Bachchan), an aged man in search of his granddaughter who was kidnapped eight years ago. One of the inspectors involved in the original investigation was so traumatized by the event that he became a priest and now goes by the name of Father Martin (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). In the present day, John regularly goes to the police station and pesters a cop named Sarita (Vidya Balan) for news about his daughter. Finally one day a very similar kidnapping takes place and the case is blown wide open after a long time. Sarita enlists Father Martin’s help to solve the case while John conducts his investigation by himself as they delve into a terrifying world of intrigue and suspense. Ribhu Dasgupta manages to beautifully convey his love for the City Of Joy through the visuals he gives us. The movie looks gorgeous and manages to evoke Kolkatta beautifully. But it falters when it comes to the sluggish screenplay which ultimately proves to be the film’s weakest link. Te3n moves at its own sweet space and the whole thing gets rather tedious. Moreover many people felt that the final twist, unlike Kahaani, was something they definitely saw coming a long way off. And now coming to the strongest point of the movie - the performances. Amitabh Bachchan puts in a solid performance and his portrayal of a tired but determined old man will truly stay with you. Vidya Balan infuses a strong energy into the film with her performance while Nawazuddin Siddique once more evocates some of the best moments in the film with his subtle but dry portrayal of a priest. Overall, Te3n is no Kahaani but it is still a very good film in its own right. If you enjoy slow potboilers with some fantastic performances and truly thrilling moments.
